Without any test flight with a full tank, he didn’t even know if his aircraft was capable of taking off with a full fuel load, regardless of the runway length. Surly he should have used a test flight to establish that fact. If he couldn’t take-off from a 4000ft runway – then he never will take off with over 90 gallons of fuel.

Many record distance flight attempts are taken without trial flights with full fuel. Landing with so much fuel load is usually more dangerous than takeoff. Charles Lindberg only had full fuel at his record attempt & Rutan’s record Voyager flight around the world flew only once with full fuel.

Bad luck. Hard to know if another 1000 feet of runway would have made any difference, whole package so heavy.

Wow. Inspirational. Such a shame this was scuppered – with a little support the dream could have become a reality.
