Microlight flying – My first ever flight in a microlight
ByMy first ever flight in a microlight. The flight that started me off on a long and expensive road… Haven’t regretted a minute or a penny spent though!

Not really, you’d be amazed at how safe you do feel. I’ve flown dozens of people and every one has enjoyed it. Find your local school and give it a go with an instructor; it just might be a life changing experience…

In the UK you can begin training before 14 years of age but the hours do not count towards the total you need for your licence until you reach 14. Although you can complete most of the course earlier, you cannot fly solo until 16 or receive a microlight pilot’s licence until you are 17.

How expensive is the sport? I mean maintenance and the petrol. Does it cost a bomb?

Depends where you are, in the UK it costs about £2500 – £3000 for your license and 2nd hand trikes can be had for £2500 upwards. Most trikes will use 9 to 15l per hour of petrol (normal unleaded) plus of course if it is a two stroke then you need the 2 stroke oil too.
