We are going to try and do something on this at some point. We’re just soo snowed under right now that when we do a peice on it we want to do it right. But it’s not an easy subject to cover well. Lots of research, time and resources will be needed.

my only problem is the canadian colour vision test they don’t really offer a lot of colour vision tests like in the U.S…. so if nothing works then i will have to move to the states. ——————————————————plz DO give any advise

can i get a SODA and use it for the canadian Medical examiners? and is it possible for me to use the FAA medical certificate for the Canadian licence?
April 8th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Any tests not specifically listed above are unacceptable methods of testing for FAA medical certificate. Examples of unacceptable tests include,BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, the OPTEC 5000 Vision Tester (color vision portion), “Farnsworth Lantern Flashlight,” “yarn tests,” and AME-administered aviation Signal Light Gun test (AME office use is prohibited).
What does this mean? IS the light gun test still available?
thinking of geting a SODA from FAA

Do a google search for “The Aviation-Colour-Perception-Standard” and you will see why color vision shouldn’t be a disqualifying factor for pilots.

Thats a really good point. How can they tell the lights. They can’t
April 8th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Yes. I know Rick has considered going to the US to get a SODA test. That apparently is a lot easier. When he went night flying the other day in the recent episode he tried to look at other aircraft then and got most right.
Also on the lights. Remember that in the video they are zoomed in enourmously. In the actual test they are tiny pinpricks of light, a glow, rather than a colour

I wonder if special glasses could be made to shift red or green to say blue, they’d only need to be worn at night. Emergency and military pilots routinely wear night vision goggles – to them, everything is green!

And as someone who has trouble with the ishihara plates, those red and green lights look NOTHING alike to me like they say in the video. Most people that have problems with the tests are still “Trichromats” so they can still tell red from green in their pure form with no problem.

They need to change the colors of those 2 lights. Either that or 7% of the population should start a rally to have this changed, because it is entirely unfair. Other countries should offer a ‘Real World Test’ as well. Many people can’t pass office based color vision tests but have no problem with real world signal lights. The USA allows you to take an actual flight test for color vision if you are unable to pass an office based test. Other Aviation Authorities should follow.
