ultralight backpacking kit 1

By Darren

11 lb backpacking kit includes pack, sleeping gear, pad, rain gear, poncho/tarp tent with bug netting, water filtering and purification, cooking and eating gear, first aid kit, etc. It’s complete, safe, relatively cheap and comfortable. (Comment: Not in the video but in the pack is also a 5 x 10 foot plastic ground cloth made from punture resistant temporary storm window film available at any hardware store….and it weighs only 4 ounces. Also, see “ultralight backpacking kit 2″ for what I …

one of the best ultralight video on youtube. short, informative and ultralight.

Thank you:)

Check out the Ray Jardine site for some ideas on “quilt” type sleeping bags. Mine’s just a simple and thin version of his creation.

would you please make a video just over your sleeping gear. i would love to know more about it.

HOW MUCH WILL YOU CHARGE TO MAKE ME THAT SLEEPING BAG!! loved the vid man….

I just wipe mine down. I think soaking in soapy water would be OK, but I definitely wouldn’t put it in the washing machine. The silnylon parts for sure are way too delicate for that.

Hello, I got the same backpack that you got used, and I don’t know the best way to clean it, do you simply wipe it down with a cloth/sponge with soap or is there a better way such as washing machine or is the washing machine to rough for it

yeah you too. keep up the vids you had some great ideas for my trips that are ultra light ill def be checking out your vids to get some ideas. thanks

You’re right, of course. There’s no sense pushing it just for the sake of moving when you’ve got a beautiful lake to enjoy. Nice talking to you.

yeah its all about what you wanna do when your hiking. like i guess you like doing through hikes which is cool. i like hiking not so much on trails but to secluded high mountain lakes and trout fishing for a few days while hiking up and around on the near by mountains when im not fishing. ive done the ultra light thing alot to and i respect it cause it is really nice have a really lite pack i just like havng options but whatever style works and gets you in the outdoors is te one you should use

Yes, I was young and strong once…now I’m an old weak ultralighter! But..I can walk 15 or 20 miles a day, and then do it again the next day because I’m only carrying 20 lbs: 11 lb pack plus 9 lbs of food and water. I’ve done the 40 lb base pack and carried 50 plus lbs with food and water and what did it get me? Old and weak…and smarter!

great pack for through hikes and some great ideas. i carry about a 40# pack but im in my 20s so its ok haha. i will usually hike 10 or 15 miles in and then stay there for a couple of days next to a like or something and fish and do day hikes from my campsite. alot of my stuff is ultra light but i still like optionis. great video again though gives me some great ideas on saving weight when i am doing through hikes.

thanks
josh

not for hi-jacking planes haha nice lil dark humor i love it lol

That would actually work, but you’d have be one rabbit ahead of the game or you’d have to wait a few hours…or even days if my teenage snaring experiences mean anything…before you could decontaminate your anus.

i snare a young rabbit and wipe my arse with it when lacking toilet paper

The THING started out as a 2 by 6 foot sleeping bag liner..a piece of 1 cm Primaloft sport quilt, covered with lighweight breathable nylon. Then I cut a head hole into it 2 feet down, making it a poncho, too, with a short side for my back and and a long side for my front..the excess folded up for torso warmth. Then I cut a midline slit in the front forming “legs” which tuck into my pants & go 1/2 around my thighs..making an insulating clothes liner good down to the 20′s F. It weighs 13 oz.

My obsession with your backpacking setup continues! Could you describe your “thing” in detail? It’s the sort of bedding sleeping thingy without a name. It appears to be the garment that Mormons wear under their clothing. Is that what it is, in fact?
Seriously–what is it?

Small pieces of tyvek..for mittens and even chaps…I’ve gotten out of dumpsters at constructions sites. Ultimately, though, I knuckled under and bought a roll of it at Home Depot. A 9 foot by 100 foot role has lasted me for years through lots of tents, tarps, groundcloths and sails for canoes and iceboats. It cost me $100. You must buy tyvek tape for this…another $10. Nothing else sticks to it. You can even cover a canoe with tyvek….for a while!

No bull I like it. Where and what type of tyvek do you use? Thanks.

One capful of the vodka lights up an esbit tablet just fine. 2/3 of an ounce boils the water in your Heineken Can. Two ounces makes you feel all right.

Unfortunately my little bottle only holds one ounce!

Excellent details. I showed your video to my buddy who was equally fascinated. We discussed details. YouTube is an interesting phenomenon in this way–that this could happen. I had wondered about the vodka–we all have one or two necessaries that come along. Thanks.

1. Non skidi s the rubber net that you put under throw rugs to keep them from throwing you..it weighs 1.2 oz, +or- 0.2 oz.

2. The nubbins originally were washers made from sections of cut bamboo and glued onto laquered Japanese type chopsticks. Now I just use blobs of “Goop” glue.

3. I pack 1.5 to 1.8 lbs of food per day and it’s cheese, chocolate, nuts, sausage, dried fruit, tortillas…and tea. (+ 190 proof vodka.)

4. I don’t need no stinking toulle. I dance naked in the wooods.

What exactly is the non-skid ‘stuff’ you have, and what does it weigh? Do you make your chopstick stake ‘nubbins’ from duct tape? Does the tulle double for when you feel inspired to dance?
Do a video that accompanies this one to describe what food you might pack for 3-4 days with this setup.
What saw is your saw exactly?
Again, I’m inspired.

By the way, I’m KC7FYS in Saint Paul–not far from your callbook QTH. Best regards, Jonathan (also 7J1AWL and XV2OC)

I look forward to a video dedicated to more close-ups of your tyvek items. I plan to dumpster dive soon and copy you. You have created a monster!!
