The old guys gear was far better. We are not all 22 with good backs

just use a water pump, Good Grief or a steripen and keep rolling. Stop making it harder than what it is. Try carrying a backpack through a bad neighborhood, i bet you’ll use a water filter then.

Really great series! Not sure I can give up all my creature comforts, but I’d probably drop 7 or 8 pounds if I followed the kids advice!

Good advice, but a couple of comments;

1. Ultralight really is dependent upon terrain/location/season – one reason it is safest on PCT.

2. Drinking untreated/unfiltered/unboiled water can work well … until the day it doesnt, and then it can be a trip ender, and even life threatening.

3. Its largely a myth about down being useless when wet – any type of bag you want to avoid getting wet, and down loses more heat retention than syn when wet – but it isnt useless.

fantastic series. thanks for sharing!

Fantastic series of vids…

Another way to get rid of the chlorine taste is simply to let it sit for an hour or so with the lid off – the chlorine will separate out and evaporate. I have to do that to drink my tap water.

its that lil’ bit of extra security that makes people feel better

I remember this place from my thruhike in 01. I vaguely remember getting my own gear check at MC in the beginning (started with 65 lb pack!). The item by item comparison was informative, but I was hungering for some numbers! A hanging scale or some post-production graphics would have capped this off well. The insole camp shoes are a neat idea.

If your going to boil the water you wont need chlorine tablets.

best pack video ever
i have learned a lot from it

if your gonna use the chlorine tablets, you can boil the water to get rid of the taste.

this is part 4

Awesome vid, thanks.

Love the Video ! Makes me want to Hit the Trail ! What is the cat’s name ! A mini Mountain Lion perhaps ! I noticed you didn’t have a canister or ursack . Thanks …Coyote
