Victoria Falls by Microlight

By Darren

On our final day in Southern Africa, my wife and I headed out of Livingstone for a helicopter flight over the mighty Victoria falls. I decided to take the microlight alternative with Hans, their top pilot at Batoka Sky. This would be my long time wish come true – to soar like a bird over such a majestic scene. The emotions and sense of fulfillment was indescribable as I came in to land on that final day in Africa.

It was scary at first, but you will feel quite safe once you are in the air and enjoying your new challenge. Life is all about those challenges and even in the autumn of my years I want to feel that age does not prevent me overcoming my fears.
Once you start to fly, you will become another new person and feel so proud of your achievement. Remember it will glide like a bird if all else fails, not so for other means of transport. Get back to me on this later. Mike.

Your flight looks amazing! My husband Ian helped to set up Batoka Skies back in the 90s, way before we met. He has shown me a few photos, but seeing your slideshow has really bought it alive for me. We now fly around greenbelt Essex and the Thames Estuary – not quite as spectacular, but still pretty thrilling!

Thank you for your comment. It is an experience that I will always cherish and to have done it in that place was magical for me at my age of 59 years. I would encourage anyone to take that oportunity when it comes and sense what flying like a bird is really like. Do it at least once and you will feel you have really accomplished one of lifes great challenges…….

Dear Mike, thanks for sharing this with us. We’re going to Livingstone next year in August. I was planning to go on the microlight and your slideshow convinsed me to do it!!

Sorry I missed you comment! Yes, they automatically take a series of photos at set points throughout the flight that are triggered by the pilot and they are offer to you on landing after a full viewing. My CD contained over 68 shots and the charge was $20 US…well worth it as they are good quality SLR digital images. Taking your own photos would not be conducive to a comfortable flight in my opinion LOL. Thank you for asking! Mike.

Dear Mike. Your Microlight flight gave me goosepimples just watching! Amazing. I’m planning a trip to South Africa next year, Doing what you did would possibly be just a dream for me though as I’m terrified of heights. My Mum seems to think my fear would vanish within a few minutes of being up there. Truely breathtaking scenary.
Was about to ask about taking photos, but your clip informs me of the wing mounted camera :) Do they provide you with the photos on a dvd for you to keep?

WOW!!!
